"I'm old enough to have been around when all we had were comedy clubs," Joe Piscopo said surveying the scene. "Look how much it's grown."
Fellow funnyman Louie Anderson added his bit. "I'm here because they've been so good to me. Comedy Central has always been innovative, not over the top."
Proving that wrong was the evening's live entertainment, Bombity of Errors, a quartet of boys doing whatever they thought might get them shot, provided ear-bleeding sound. (Wine glasses shattered, dogs whined by the East River.) "We've all been making fun of the band," said Nancy Pimental, co-host of "Win Ben Stein's Money." About her colleague Ben Stein she said, "Most people don't know Ben's smart too. Most people love him for his sexy good looks."
Comedy Central senior VP of original programming Debbie Liebling stood between two of the speakers screaming above the din: "Incredible how it's grown. Incredible! The innovation ... this party ... it's a testament as to how far we've come."
Other folk at the celebration included Comedy Central CEO Larry Diveny, HBO's Jeff Bewkes, Tisha Campbell, Jayne Clayson, Al Franken, Jim Gaffigan, Janeane Garofalo, Cynthia Garret, D.L. Hugley, Paul Reubens, Caroline Rhea, David Spade, Martin Short, Stein, Robert Smigel, George Wallace and Steven Weber.
