MIAMI -- Andy Garcia will exec produce an HBO telepic based on the life of a Cuban-American doctor who works with the homeless, in the actor-producer's second Latino-themed project for the cabler.

Garcia portrayed the famed Cuban trumpeter in "For Love or Country: The Arturo Sandoval Story," which aired on HBO last November. He was also exec producer of the project.

New pic is based on Dr. Pedro Jose Greer's 1999 memoir "Waking Up in America: How One Doctor Brings Hope to Those Who Need It Most." Greer founded Miami's Camillus Health Concern, a downtown clinic that treats the poor and homeless.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Miami Herald columnist Liz Balmaseda, who co-wrote the book, will co-pen the script with Juan Carlos Coto. Balmaseda previously worked with Garcia on the Sandoval pic.

Project was packaged by William Morris agent Raul Mateu, who represented Greer on the book.

Garcia may have the lead role of Dr. Greer, but his agent Clifford Stevens of Paradigm, said, "It is too early to tell." He is filming "Ocean's Eleven" until May, Stevens said.

Garcia also recently signed on to star in an adaptation of Isabel Allende's "Gift for a Sweetheart." Backed by Spain's Canal Plus, the English-lingo telepic will be directed by Carlos Saura.
