Jean Stock

The European Broadcasting Union in Geneva has chosen Frenchman Jean Stock to succeed Jean-Bernard Munch as its chief exec.

Stock, who is prexy of pubcaster TV5 and Canal France Intl., was approved by a majority of the heads of member European broadcasting organizations Friday.

The French Foreign Affairs Ministry was alarmed by the sudden departure of TV5's prexy two years before the end of his mandate, La Tribune reported Monday.

Stock will join the EBU at the end of the year to give him time to finish projects at the network.

Before joining TV5 in 1998, Stock spent most of his career working in several countries for the Luxembourg-based CLT group, which includes RTL.

He started in journalism at 16 with his own pirate radio show that sold homework solutions to fellow students.

The EBU's 69 core members include the national public broadcasters of every European country.
