Gusinsky back to prison
Court process could drag on for months
The provisional prison order, served by Spain's National Court of Criminal Justice to ensure Gusinsky's court attendance, was the only substantive move Friday as the hearings settled into a process that could drag out for months.
On Thursday, Spain's public prosecutor Eduardo Fungairino had unsur-prisingly supported the petition of the Russian government for Gusinsky to be extradited back to Russia. Spanish judges must now decide whether to throw out the extradition request on the grounds that it is a political setup, as argued by Gusinsky's defense.
Gusinsky was arrested in Spain on an international warrant Dec. 13 after a Russian prosecutor accused him of fraud. He paid $5 million bail but was sent back to jail March 12, just before the start of extradition proceedings.
