PARIS -- Norwegian actress and director Liv Ullmann will head the jury at this year's Cannes Film Festival, replacing Jodie Foster who pulled out earlier this month, organizers said on Sunday.

"I am honored and deeply appreciative,'' Ullmann was quoted as saying on her nomination.

Ullmann gained international fame after appearing in films by Swedish director Ingmar Bergman such as "Shame,'' "Cries and Whispers'' and "Scenes from a Marriage.''

The Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place at the French Riviera resort from May 9-20.

Foster was initially chosen as president of the jury but withdrew citing a clash with her filming commitments. Foster said she was drafted at short notice to replace Nicole Kidman, who withdrew from the upcoming "Panic Room,'' directed by David Fincher, due to injury.
