Dempsey and Skerritt climb 'Hill'

Pair to play father, son docs

Patrick Dempsey has joined the cast of the NBC pilot "Chestnut Hill," while veteran thesp Tom Skerritt ("Picket Fences") is in final negotiations for the lead role in the drama from "Providence" creator-exec producer John Masius.

If a deal can be hammered out, Skerritt will play the just-retired U.S. surgeon general, who's trying to adjust to post-Washington life. Dempsey will play Skerritt's son, also a doctor.

In addition to his toplining gig on the CBS drama "Picket Fences," Skerritt has starred in a slew of telepics, including the recent Eye mini "Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis," "The Hunt for the Unicorn Killer," "Aftershock: Earthquake in New York" and "What the Deaf Man Heard."

Dempsey has recently had a high-profile guest role on the Peacock's hit Thursday laffer "Will & Grace." Thesp's last major series role was in CBS' short-lived 1986 adaptation of the teen pic classic "Fast Times at Ridgemont High."

He's been in several telepics and minis, including "Crime and Punishment," "20,000 Leagues under the Sea" and "The Right to Remain Silent." In 1993, Dempsey played John F. Kennedy in the mini "JFK: Reckless Youth." On the feature side, thesp's credits include "Outbreak" and "With Honors."
