Cappon takes over for Celli at RAI

Previously top exec at IRI

MILAN -- Italy's pubcaster RAI appointed Claudio Cappon as director general on Friday, the day after Pier Luigi Celli resigned from the top post.

Cappon, 48, has held the post of vice director general since 1998.

Previously he was a top exec at former state-owned holding company IRI, which was recently dissolved as part of the privatization process.

RAI president Roberto Zaccaria said the board decision to appoint Cappon was unanimous.

"The ones who criticize RAI efficiency and claim nothing is under control are wrong. We reached a decision, and a good decision just a few hours after Celli resigned," Zaccaria said.

Cappon is expected to hold his new post until the end of April, when Italy's political elections are due.

If the right-wing coalition led by Silvio Berlusconi wins, the current RAI board will be replaced by new executives close to the TV tycoon-turned-politico.
