Lions Gate nabs 'Liam'

Pic stars newcomer Borrows, Hart

Lions Gate Releasing has acquired U.S. theatrical distribution rights to "Liam," a critically hailed drama directed by Stephen Frears. A summer 2001 release is planned.

Written by Jimmy McGovern and set in the Irish Catholic quarter of Liverpool in the 1930s, the film is seen through the eyes of 7-year-old Liam as his family free-falls into poverty during the Depression. The film stars newcomer Anthony Borrows; Ian Hart plays his father.

Repped by the Sales Co., "Liam" is produced by Colin McKeown and Martin Tempia, exec produced by David M. Thompson, Tessa Ross and Sally Hibbin and co-produced by Ulrich Felsberg.

Lions Gate recently acquired all North American rights to "Double Whammy," starring Denis Leary and Elizabeth Hurley, at the Sundance Film Festival.

Upcoming Lions Gate releases include "The Widow of St. Pierre," "Amores Perros" and "The Golden Bowl."
