Nets on auto pilot
ABC orders 'Brewster' drama while NBC eyes 'Spy'
The Peacock has its eyes on "Spy Girl," a drama pilot from Warner Bros. Television and Bel Air Entertainment. The project focuses on a twentysomething Ivy League grad who joins a private investigation agency. Once there, a romance develops between her and another P.I.
"Spy Girl" will be shot as a pilot presentation. Ed Redlich ("Jack & Jill," "Felicity") and Becky Hartman ("Jack & Jill," "Suddenly Susan") will executive produce.
Redlich's other credits include stints as a co-producer on "The Practice" and "Sweet Justice"; Hartman has worked on "Living Single," "The Larry Sanders Show" and "In Living Color."
Going to the law
Meanwhile, the verdict is "go" at ABC for a reality legal series from "Blind Date" producers Renegade Entertainment.
The Alphabet web has made a substantial commitment to the series, which features Fieger, who also gained notice in 1999 when he represented the family that sued "The Jenny Jones Show" in Michigan.
In the skein, Fieger will head up a new law firm that fights civil cases against another law firm.
Sources call the show a reality "L.A. Law." Cameras will follow both the firm's court cases and also the personal relationships between lawyers.
Renegade has been busy as of late. The company's David Garfinkle and Jay Renfroe will also produce UPN's "Chains of Love" with Endemol Entertainment.
Not tempted
UPN had originally picked up the reality series "Temptation Manor" for Renegade; that project was scrapped because it was too similar to Fox's "Temptation Island."
The Fieger project has been in the works for some time; NBC, meanwhile, also has a legal reality skein in the works from Dick Wolf, "Trial and Error" (Daily Variety, Feb. 2).
ABC has also greenlit "Being Brewster," an hourlong family drama from Touchstone Television targeted for fall 2001. Skein is from scribe Kerry Ehrin ("Cold Feet"); Ehrin and former Imagine TV exec Nena Rodrigue serve as exec producers.
Sources familiar to the project affectionately compare it to " '7th Heaven' on acid."
In addition to serving as a writer and exec producer on "Cold Feet," Ehrin's other credits include writing for the WB drama "Young Americans," as well as the classic skeins "Fame," "Moonlighting" and "Growing Pains."
