HOLLYWOOD -- Irwin W. Young, chairman of Du Art Film Laboratories and Du Art Video, will take home the Gordon E. Sawyer Award at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' Scientific and Technical Awards, to be held at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on March 3.
He will be the 15th recipient of the nod.
Established in 1981, the Sawyer honor is bestowed upon an "individual in the motion picture industry whose technological contributions have brought credit to the industry."
As part of the Gotham film community, Young has helped to shepherd numerous independent films to the screen through Du Art Laboratories. His producing credits include "Whatever," "Caught," "American Me" and "Nothing But a Man," which was a double prize winner at the Venice Film Festival.
Nod marks Oscar No. 2 for Young; in 1979, Young, Paul Kaufman and Frederick Schlyter from Du Art Laboratories were honored with a tech award for the development of a computer-controlled paper tape programming system.
Young serves as prexy of the Film Society of Lincoln Center. He is also a board member of the Independent Feature Project.
