Channel 4 in India nudity tiff

British channel violated Mela Act by airing photos of nude pilgrims

NEW DELHI -- The state government has served a notice on Britain's Channel Four, which covered the Maha Kumbh Mela in India, for showing nudity onscreen.

The channel violated the Mela Act by airing pictures of nude pilgrims taking the holy dip during the world's largest spiritual gathering.

The government has classified the media's airing of such pictures as misuse of power and against public sensibility. All foreign and Indian media have been served with similar notices since a public outcry against such images was brought to the notice of the government.

The government also plans to take further action against violators of the Mela rules.
