Gauls plan indie meet

French producers look to get solons involved

PARIS -- Charles Gassot and other French producers are creating an annual rendezvous for the world's independent filmmakers.

Gassot told Daily Variety that the French Union of Producers, led by Alain Terzian, will lobby Paris' two mayoral candidates to commit to the event, which the union hopes to hold next year.

Gassot said the rendezvous, which could involve the screening of 20 movies a day as well as conferences and debates, already has the support of Unifrance, the organization that promotes French film.

"I've been thinking about getting this off the ground for the past four years. Now we are moving forward," said the producer of such hit films as Agnes Jaoui's French Oscar contender "The Taste of Others" and Etienne Chatiliez's "Life Is a Long Low River."

The UFP has had no formal contact with other producers' associations about the project yet, but its members have received positive feedback informally.
