'Santa' pair circle 'Joe'

Role had been on Carrey's short list until 'Bijou'

"Santa Clause II" wasn't ready to shoot pre-strike at Disney, but the team behind the first "Santa Clause," mainly director John Pasquin and thesp Tim Allen, is near a deal to make "Joe Somebody" at Fox 2000.

Penned by former Kansas City advertising exec turned scribe John Scott Shepherd, comedy concerns a divorced corporate everyman at the end of his rope who's beaten up.

"Somebody" had been on Jim Carrey's short list before he committed to Castle Rock Entertainment's Frank Darabont-helmed pic "The Bijou," penned by Michael Sloane and Darabont. "Somebody" was also one of several films that Jay Roach ("Meet the Parents") considered directing.

Post-strike, Allen still plans to make "Santa Clause II," subject to script revision. He is also attached to Imagine/Universal's "Cat and the Hat," another post-strike film. He will next be seen in the Disney ensemble comedy "Big Trouble," directed by Barry Sonnenberg and based on the Dave Barry novel.

Besides the first "Santa Clause," Pasquin and Allen worked together on Disney's "Jungle 2 Jungle."

"Somebody" will be produced by Arnold and Anne Kopelson. Fox 2000 prexy Elizabeth Gabler and exec veep Carla Hacken are overseeing the project for the studio.
