The selection committee for USC's 13th annual Scripter Award, honoring excellence in adaptation from book to film, has named the five nominees.
They are:
"All the Pretty Horses," Cormac McCarthy, author; Ted Tally, screenwriter (Miramax Films)
"Chocolat," Joanne Harris, author; Robert Nelson Jacobs, screenwriter (Miramax Films)
"High Fidelity," Nick Hornby, author; D.V. DeVincentis, Steve Pink & John Cusack and Scott Rosenberg, screenwriters (Touchstone Pictures)
"The House of Mirth," Edith Wharton, author; Terence Davies, screenwriter (Sony Pictures Classics)
"Wonder Boys," Michael Chabon, author; Steven Kloves, screenwriter (Paramount Pictures)
The winning collaboration will be announced Jan. 22.
Sponsored by the Friends of the USC Libraries, the Scripter Award is given annually to honor the single superlative achievement in book adaptation among English-lingo films released the previous year. It is academia's only award for film writing.
Recent winners include the authors of "The Hurricane," "A Civil Action" and "L.A. Confidential."
