Northern lights up 'Dina' cast

Depardieu to star in Scandi pic

Norwegian production house Northern Lights has concluded negotiations with French actor Gerard Depardieu, who will join the cast for Danish director Ole Bornedal's $10.6 million pic "I Am Dina."

U.K. actor Hans Matheson and Norwegian actress Wenche Foss have also been signed for the film, which also stars Maria Bonnevie and Pernilla August.

Principal photography will start in the spring on locations in and around Kjerringoy, an 18th-century trading center turned museum 80 miles north of the Arctic Circle. Based on a novel by Norwegian author Herbjorg Wassmo, the film will follow a woman whose life has been marked by an event during her childhood, when she inadvertently caused the death of her mother.

Instigated by Academy Award-winning producer Per Holst ("Pelle the Conqueror"), "I Am Dina" will be the most expensive feature ever produced in Scandinavia, with five countries chipping in and Denmark's Nordisk Film as the main financier. Bornedal ("Nightwatch") and Swedish writer-director Jonas Cornell wrote the script for the Axel Helgeland production.
