Greenwald drinks in 'Whiskey' telepic
Tribute to nightclub based on Vanity Fair article
Greenwald ("Steal This Movie," "Blonde") will exec produce "Live at the Whiskey," which is being developed as a two-hour telepic for Showtime.
Based on the Vanity Fair article of the same name by David Kamp, "Live at the Whiskey" will pay tribute to Elmer Valentine, the music impresario who invented the go-go girl and gave unknown musical acts like Crosby, Stills & Nash and the Byrds a place to play.
"'Live at the Whiskey' will dramatize Valentine's battles with the mob, which wanted in on his business, and the city of L.A., which wanted to raze Sunset Boulevard to make room for the 10 highway," said Alys Shanti, Greenwald vice president, who will supervise the project.
RGP is close to signing a deal with Danny Goldberg's Artemis Records for the soundtrack to "Live at the Whiskey."
Greenwald is also exec producing the four-hour miniseries "Suspicion Matrix," the story of former government physicist-alleged spy Dr. Wen Ho Lee and his family, for ABC. Shanti will supervise the production. Along with a team from the Annenberg School of Communications at USC, journalist Robert Scheer will act as technical consultant on the project.
In a separate deal, Hyperion, the book publishing unit of ABC, has acquired the world rights to Dr. Lee's first-person account of his ordeal.
