Project, based on Louis Sachar's tale of a young man convicted of a crime he did not commit, will be the second major assignment for Hanley. He previously wrote the screenplay for Lions Gate's "Frailty," starring Bill Paxton and Matthew McConaughey.
The titular holes are those the protag is forced to dig in a Texas detention camp before discovering the warden is looking for hidden treasure.
Davis and Teresa Tucker-Davies will produce "Holes," and Phoenix exec VP Eric Paquette and director of development Brad Fischer will oversee the project.
Hanley is repped by Gersh and managed by AMG.
