'Angels' ascends o'seas

Blighty gets 'Bedazzled' while Oz gets 'Snatch'ed

Just as in the U.S., Sony's "Charlie's Angels" has chick-kicked its way to an impressive box office perf in its foreign debut.

The "Angels" earned $411,280 in nine key Japanese cities on Saturday.

In the U.K., Liz Hurley starrer "Bedazzled" glittered as the best weekend opener and "Snatch" just managed to grab the imagination Down Under.

"What Lies Beneath" apparently held its top spot in Blighty through Saturday, before being outshone by "Bedazzled," which over three days earned an estimated $1.61 million on 329 screens. UIP's "Pitch Black" opened in their wake with a two-day estimate of $850,000 on 294 screens.

"Bedazzled" clinched No. 1 in Argentina, earning approximately $275,000 from 50 over three days. On 168 screens in Brazil it collected about $405,000 over the same period, but it failed to impact in Japan with a two-day estimate of $310,000 from 158 screens.

In Oz, local hit comedy "The Dish" held second spot in its fourth lap, fending off a challenge by Guy Ritchie's "Snatch" with approximate opening earnings of $643,000 from 153 screens over four days. Pic fared better in New Zealand, opening on top with an estimated $418,000 over three days to Saturday.

In what appears to be another ho-hum weekend on the continent, the Germans appreciated some weekend cheerleader action, urging "Bring It On" into the top spot with estimated two-day earnings of $689,000 from 397 screens. The "Blair Witch" sequel pulled into third spot with a better screen average, earning about $611,000 from 299 venues.

Across the border, "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" debuted in Austria to steal the top spot from "Space Cowboys" on its second lap, earning approximately $63,000 through Saturday on 41 screens. In Mexico the fright sequel did likewise, earning about $457,394 from 169 screens over the same period and displacing "Por la libre" in its fourth lap.

"The Replacements" failed to impact in Australia and pegged third spot in Spain with about $150,000 from 151 screens over two days.
