Euro film database bows

Progress of product can be tracked across continent

BRUSSELS -- The European Audiovisual Observatory, an EU funded data gatherer, presents Monday its "Lumiere" database, which holds full admissions data for 3,000 titles from 34 territories across Europe since 1996.

Lumiere allows searches by title, director, year and country of production and co-production.

As well as appealing to an audience of producers and directors, who can track the progress of their product in territories across Europe, the Observatory's Lone Le Floch-Andersen argues, "it will be very useful to European policymakers who will be able to assess how effective their policies have been at promoting the cross-border circulation of European films."

Data from Lumiere could also be used in negotiating foreign distribution rights and TV and video rights.

The Observatory, which is funded by the European Union, says that Lumiere will be updated annually, on data from national sources across the Observatory's member states.
