Thesp trio step up for 'Confessions'

Tale loosely inspired by Cinderella

MONTREAL -- Stockard Channing, Azura Skye and Jonathan Pryce topline the TV movie "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister," which will air on ABC in May.

Pic is produced by Alliance Atlantis in association with Delux Prods. and the Film Fund Luxembourg. Toronto-based Alliance Atlantis is selling the pic internationally. Lensing just kicked off in Luxembourg and is set to wrap Nov. 27.

Loosely inspired by the Cinderella story, tale is set in 17th century Holland and focuses on Cinderella's teenage stepsister Iris (Skye).

"It's the Cinderella story from the perspective of the ugly stepsister," said Peter Sussman, the L.A.-based president of Alliance Atlantis Entertainment.

Novel interpretation

Executive producer is Ed Gernon, exec VP of movies and miniseries at Alliance Atlantis, with Jan Peter Meyboom and Jimmy de Brabant producing. Gene Quintano ("Operation Dumbo Drop") penned the script based on the novel by Gregory Maguire and Gavin Miller ("Dreamchild") is directing.

"Ugly Stepsister" is one of three Alliance Atlantis projects airing on ABC this season. The others are "When Billie Beat Bobby," a look at the famous 1973 tennis match between Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs, starring Holly Hunter and Ron Silver, and "Me and My Shadows," with Judy Davis playing Judy Garland.
