'Requiem' splits Spanish nod
Three jurors vote for 'Town,' also about drug addiction
The six-person jury (the seventh member, Italian actress Sandra Cecarelli, abandoned the festival midweek for personal reasons) awarded the top prize to Darren Aronofsky's "Requiem for a Dream," his followup to "*," and Robert Guediguian's panoramic view of life in a troubled town, "The Town Is Quiet" ("La ville est tranquille"). Both pics are based on the problems of drug addiction.
"Ville" also took best actress for Ariane Ascaride's perf as a mother trying to help her addicted son, while best actor went to Damian Alcazar in Luis Estrada's "Herod's Law" ("La ley de Herodes") for his role as a small-town politico in 1940s Mexico.
The Silver Spike for runner-up went to Karyn Kusama's Sundance hit "Girlfight."
The Valladolid Fest consolidated its role this year as a Spanish window for cutting-edge arthouse cinema.
