Channel 5 ups Airey to chief executive

B'caster topper to remain director of programming

LONDON -- Dawn Airey has been upped to the post of chief exec of Channel 5, replacing David Elstein, who exits with a hefty golden handshake.

Airey's appointment, effective immediately, is a reward for building the 3-1/2-year-old terrestrial channel's viewing share to its current 6%. Giving Airey the top job also means the respected exec won't be lost to a rival broadcaster.

Airey will also continue as director of programming for C5 -- known for its cheap and cheerful fare, including latenight soft porn.

Industry vet Elstein, meanwhile, is exercising the share options of his four-year contract and has no immediate plans. Under his watch, C5 progressed ahead of expectations to its present breakeven point.
