Smells like teen spirit

'Bring it On' high-kicks box office

"Bring it On" gave Universal reason to cheer, debuting with a studio-estimated $17.4 million to top the weekend B.O.

Cheerleading comedy starring Kirsten Dunst, produced by Beacon Entertainment, managed to connect with the same fickle teen auds who spurned previous summer pics "Boys and Girls" and "Loser."

Fellow debuts "The Art of War" and "The Crew" paled in comparison. "War" collected $11.2 million for Warner Bros., while "The Crew" posted $4.1 million for Disney.

Last week's champ, New Line's "The Cell," tumbled to third place with a $9.6 million outing. Jennifer Lopez thriller retreated 45% and has grossed $33.7 million to date.

Despite the heady start for "Bring It On," which would be the highest ever for the weekend prior to Labor Day, the overall B.O. remained tame. Its 5% dip from the same frame in 1999 repped the fifth straight weekend in the red.
