Tavianis to try TV with Tolstoy tome
'Resurrection' mini to be produced by Filmtre for RAI
Budgeted at roughly 11.5 billion lire ($5.75 million), the Italo-French-German co-production will start shooting Monday in St. Petersburg, Russia, and will continue filming for 14 weeks on locations in Prague, Bratislava and Slovakia, near the Russian border.
Tolstoy's 1899 novel concerns a poor Russian girl seduced and abandoned by a young aristocrat whom she encounters again while standing trial years later.
Pubcaster production
Regular Taviani brothers collaborator Grazia Volpi will produce through her Filmtre banner for Italian pubcaster division RAI Fiction, with Pampa Prods., France 2 and German outfit Bavaria Film. The project comprises two episodes of 100 minutes each.
Cast includes Stefania Rocca, Timothy Peach, Giulio Scarpati, Giulia Lazzarini, Marina Vlady and Antonella Ponziani.
"Resurrection" marks the Tavianis' second Tolstoy adaptation after their 1990 feature "Night Sun," based on a short story by the Russian author. The directors' other films include "Padre Padrone" (which won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Intl. Film Festival in 1977), "Night of the Shooting Stars," "Elective Affinities" and "You're Laughing."
