Oz radio is re-regulated

Aussie officials find 119 code breaches

Amid a mounting payola scandal, Australian radio's eight-year flirtation with self-regulation will be suspended for 2-1/2 years in favor of a re-regulated environment.

That's the outcome of an Australian Broadcasting Authority inquiry, which condemned radio stations for their "systemic failure to ensure the effective operation of the industry's self-regulatory code of practice" after uncovering 119 breaches of the code.

The inquiry stemmed from last year's "cash for comments" affair, in which talkradio hosts were found to have contravened radio codes through secret sponsorship contracts that influenced the content of their shows.
