Hartford, Cabaret win Conn. Critics awards

'Tallulah,' 'April' among winners

SOUTHBURY, Conn. -- Tovah Feldshuh, Frank Ferrante, Hartford Stage and Bridgeport's Downtown Cabaret Theater headed the list of awardees at the 10th annual Connecticut Critics Circle Awards for achievement in Connecticut theater during the 1999-2000 season.

Feldshuh won the actress in a play award for "Tallulah Tonight!" at Hartford's TheaterWorks, a production being considered for a move to Off Broadway. Ferrante was named best actor in a play for "Groucho" at the Westport Country Playhouse.

Hartford Stage and the Downtown Cabaret Theater received five awards apiece. The HS won for production of a play, "Camino Real"; direction of a play, Michael Wilson for both "Camino Real" and "Enchanted April"; sound design, John Gromada, for both productions; and two more for "April": lighting design, Rui Rita, and costume design, Jess Goldstein.

The DCT won four for "Guys and Dolls": production of a musical, actress and actor in a musical (Amy Eschman and Anthony Santelmo Jr.), and direction of a musical, Jamie Rocco. Winning for best debut was Kirsten Wyatt, "Dames at Sea."

Other awards included: choreography, Stephen Terrell, "No, No, Nanette," Goodspeed Opera House; set design, Ed Spires, "The Beauty Queen of Leenane," Polka Dot Playhouse, Bridgeport; ensemble, Starla Benford, Kim Gainer and Tonye Patano in "From the Mississippi Delta," Stamford Theater Works; roadshow, "Ragtime," the Bushnell, Hartford; special achievement award for an innovative concept, New Haven's Long Wharf Theater in association with Los Angeles' Cornerstone Theater Co. for "The Good Person of New Haven."

The Tom Killen Award for contribution to Connecticut theater went to Cory and Bob Donnalley, who have given financial and other support to a number of theaters in the state.
