Randy Barbato and Fenton Bailey smile for 'Tammy Faye' |
At the docu's preem at the Sunset 5 on Tuesday, co-director Randy Barbato, who along with Fenton Bailey helmed the film about the fallen televangelist, said: "I think everyone has laughed at her and made fun of her, and she has been the most reviled woman of the 20th century. We're all used to our celebrities being so packaged, but then comes this fabulous mess called Tammy Faye, and she's letting it all hang out. She is the author of her own jokes, and she's a smart woman."
Talking of his choice of narrator, RuPaul Charles, Barbato said, "The public thinks of them both as these one-dimensional cardboard characters, yet they're both architects of these incredible public personas."
"It's the strength and the vulnerability at the same time," Charles said about why he thinks Messner has such a strong underground following. "I think that is the makings of a great icon. She's the Judy Garland of the evangelist world."
Those who clicked their heels three times and got to the Les Deux Cafe for the after-party were Lions Gate's co-prexy Tom Ortenberg, guests Carrie Fisher, Mo Gaffney, Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira), Bruce Vilanch, and Holly Woodlawn.
