Disney bags 'Boy' as vehicle for Karz

Rothschild comedy pitched, bought same day

Walt Disney execs have preemptively bought -- on the morning they heard it -- tyro feature scribe Erica Rothschild's pitch "Birthday Boy" for on-lot producer Mike Karz.

Project will be produced by Karz via his Karz Entertainment shingle and overseen by Russell Hollander, the company's development exec. Buena Vista Motion Picture Group prexy Nina Jacobson, senior veep Mark Vahradian and director of development Doug Short will oversee the film for the Mouse House.

Karz has in the past exec produced several family movies for the "Wonderful World of Disney" television series, including the multi-Emmy-nominated "Geppetto" (exec-produced with Jim Pentecost) and "Model Behavior."

"Birthday Boy" is a comedy about a young boy who, angered that family and friends give him little attention except on his birthday, manages to successfully wish for and win more attention.

Karz is also producing "First Daughter" for New Regency, to be directed by Brian Robbins from a script by Jerry O'Connell, who will also star.

Rothschild, who writes on the MTV series "Together," is repped by the Gersh Agency.
