Carlton taps Murphy chief exec

Previous topper Cain ousted last November

LONDON -- Carlton Communications is expected to name Gerry Murphy its new chief exec this week.

Murphy, the former head of freight distribution group NFC, will join Carlton as it battles with Granada Media for control of the ITV network.

Carlton's previous chief exec, Steve Cain, was ousted last November when Carlton agreed to its ill-fated £8 billion ($12 billion) merger with United News & Media, the other of the big three ITV companies.

United is now likely to be divided up between Carlton and Granada.

Although Murphy has no TV experience, his stewardship of NFC's $4.8 billion merger with Ocean group last February won him admiration within the U.K.'s financial community.

The heavyweight signing will give Carlton chairman Michael Green extra fire power to take on Granada, headed by Charles Allen.
