Inside Move: Pop.com going Underground

Pop.com, the yet-to-launch Netcaster from DreamWorks and Imagine, is close to acquiring UndergroundFilm.com, a site featuring hundreds of downloadable films, digital music files and screenplays from aspiring artists.

While a deal has yet to be inked, insiders said the acquisition of the New York-based site created by Mike Kelly and Adrien Glover is likely to be completed in the coming weeks, adding much-needed content to Pop's offerings.

Officials at Pop didn't deny the move but declined to comment. The site is being readied for what now appears to be a September or October bow.

Besides trying to assemble a slate of Webisodic series and films, Pop recently acquired movie fan site Countingdown.com. Offers for other sites may follow shortly.

As a backer of the Netcaster, DreamWorks has already begun using its properties to promote its pics, copying a page out of Warner Bros.' "Iron Giant" marketing playbook and showing the opening sequence of "Chicken Run" online -- on Countingdown.com.
