Argentine soccer rights scandal brews

Authorities seize documents to coroborate corruption accusations

BUENOS AIRES -- Argentine courts ordered raids on 17 buildings here last week, following accusations of corruption in the awarding of Argentine TV soccer rights.

Police seized reams of documents, mainly relating to contracts for the broadcast of local and international soccer matches, from the offices of the Argentine Soccer Assn., leading sports broadcaster Torneos y Competencias and the big two cable MSOs, Cablevision and Multicanal.

Raids followed accusations from the local media, later repeated by an opposition congressman, that soccer chief Julio Grondona had amassed a fortune incompatible with his declared income.

The investigation is apparently centered on the contracts for television rights to the domestic championship.
