Glass, Strindberg set for Next Wave Fest

BAM fest marks 18 years with 18 shows

The Brooklyn Academy of Music has unfurled its slate -- to include seven U.S., six New York and one North American premieres -- for the 18th annual Next Wave Festival, rolling in this fall.

Highlights of the 18 programs set to run on BAM's main stages between Oct. 4 and Dec. 10 are the North American bow of Philip Glass' "Symphony No. 5," to be performed by the Brooklyn Harmonic; and the Stateside premiere of August Strindberg's "A Dream Play," adapted and directed by Robert Wilson (helmer of Tom Waits and William Burroughs' "The Black Rider" at BAM).

'Worlds' preem

Among other shows scheduled are the Gotham preem of Naomi Iizuka's "War of the Worlds," a meditation on Orson Welles directed by Anne Bogart (co-helmer of Laurie Anderson's "Songs and Stories From Moby Dick" at BAM); "Magic Science: Celebrating Jimi Hendrix," with lightshow by Jefferson Airplane lighting designer Glenn McKay; and the U.S. bow of Heiner Muller's "Hamlet Machine," staged by Buenos Aires-based company El Periferico de Objetos.

Related film and live music programming is also scheduled during the fest at the BAM Rose Cinemas and BAMcafe.
