Columbia U. pic nabs two Acad student awards

Stein, 'One Day Crossing' get top honors

Joan L. Stein of Columbia U. won the Gold Medal for best narrative film at Sunday's 27th Annual Student Academy Awards.

Stein's work, "One Day Crossing," also was given the Directors Guild of America's Student Film Award at the ceremony held at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

In all, 12 U.S. film students and one from Germany were honored. The top animation prize went to Tod Polson's "Al Tudi Tuhak" ("Long, Long Ago"); Kennedy Wheatley's "Iron Ladies" won for documentary; and Ari Gold topped the Alternative Category with "Helicopter."

Gold medalists received $2,000; silver medalists $1,500 and bronze medalists $1,000.

Presenters at the awards included comedy hyphenate Harold Ramis, actress Alfre Woodard, cinematographer John Bailey and animation voice pro June Foray.

International competish

Once their work made it out of regional competition, Acad members screened the films and cast votes. The honorary foreign film winner was picked from 26 submissions in 19 countries.

Florian Gallenberger's "Quiro ser" took the prize, becoming the fourth consecutive German winner.

Since their inception in 1972, the awards have often been a stepping stone for acclaimed talent. Past winners include helmers Robert Zemeckis and Spike Lee, "South Park" co-creator Trey Parker and animation guru John Lasseter.
