HOLLYWOOD -- The "Save the Whales" folks brought out the big harpoons for a fund-raiser "Earth to L.A.!" celebrating their 30th anni Wednesday night at UCLA's Royce Hall.

In all, 1,800 guests from the entertainment industry and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) came to hear Pierce Brosnan, Larry David, Cameron Diaz, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Al Franken, Jewel, Diane Keaton, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Carole King speak and perform.

Louis-Dreyfus said she pitched in because "I like to help the good guys out."

Rob Reiner agreed. "I wanted to do something for the environment. Activism is much more satisfying than acting and directing, but they are still fun."

Dustin Hoffman admitted rather modestly, "I'm not an activist, but this is an important evening."

Kevin Costner remarked, "I take a practical approach in helping the environment," while Jamie Lee Curtis added: "I like to say I'm a nature advocate. Activist is too harsh a word."

Also in attendance fighting for this whale of a cause were Warner Bros. prexy and chief operating officer Alan Horn, thesps Ed Begley Jr. and Steven Weber
