As part of the arrangement, Court TV will share its legal expertise with ESPN viewers, and, in exchange, the sports station will provide athletics-related expertise for Court TV. In addition, the nets will exchange video, news segments and promos.
“Court TV’s expertise in jurisprudence, matched with ESPN’s proficiency in sports news coverage, make both networks the definitive news source for the trial,” said ESPN senior VP and managing editor Bob Eaton.
Court TV reporter Clara Tuma will lead the net’s coverage from the site of the Atlanta trial, which will begin this week. ESPN’s daily coverage will feature reporter Sal Paolantonio. In addition, experts on legal, social and National Football League matters will appear regularly on both networks as guest commentators.
Court TV has also signed former Pittsburgh Steeler and current ABC Sports commentator Lynn Swann as a guest commentator during the trial. Beginning on Thursday, Swann will join Court TV anchor Rikki Klieman during daytime coverage.
Lewis is accused of participating in a January brawl outside an Atlanta nightclub that led to the stabbing deaths of two men. Lewis and co-defendants Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting face life sentences if convicted. Lewis is the first active NFL player to be tried in a murder case.
