Cinefoundation, the section of the Cannes Film Festival created in 1998 to showcase work of film schools or first time drama or animated film productions, will establish a residence-in-Paris program starting in autumn 2000.
The program, which will be the Cannes equivalent of the Sundance Film Institute Labs, will enable young directors to develop their projects to be shown professionally.
Like the Sundance Film Institute Labs, the program will help the selected directors develop projects through collaboration with professionals. However, the professional mentors assigned in the Cannes program must commit to following up on the project. This can be the equivalent of a co-production or production of the film.
Directors selected for the residence in Paris are granted a number of advantages in association with the Cannes Film Festival . The first feature film by the director who is the winner of the Cinefoundation contest will be shown at the Cannes Film Festival.
This year only two U.S. short films were selected to participate in Cinefoundation, Caran Hartsfield “Kiss It Up to God” and Peter Sollett’s “Five Feet High and Rising.”
Cinefoundation, whose previous international jury was composed of thesps Emmanuelle Beart and Greta Scacchi, each year awards over $30,000 in prize money.
