Dovey in for Brown at ESPN Star Sports

Sr. exec upped to managing director position

SINGAPORE -- Alexander Brown has decided to step down from the helm of ESPN Star Sports and is being replaced by one of the satcaster’s senior execs, Rik Dovey.

Brown has opted not to renew his contract as managing director of the co-venture, which ends in December.

Dovey is being upped from ESS senior VP of production, operations and engineering, to managing director at the end of the year.

In a statement, William Burkhardt, exec VP of ESPN, and Star TV deputy CEO Bruce Churchill said, “It is not easy for us to find someone to succeed Sandy (Alexander) Brown.”

Successful stint

Brown has been in Asia for nine years, from the growth of the ESPN service to the ESS joint venture. He began in Asia as a one-man operation taking ESPN to a subscriber base of over 53 million, and has done virtually the same for STAR Sports.

“When the joint venture was formed in 1996, Sandy had the challenge of integrating two companies and improving the joint venture’s profitability in some of the toughest economic conditions any executive can encounter. We are extremely grateful for all of his efforts.”
