Liberty Hill's Sinclair kudos to Jewison

'Hurricane' helmer feted for showcasing socioeconomic ills

NEW YORK -- Norman Jewison will be given the Liberty Hill Foundation’s Upton Sinclair Award at the 18th annual Upton Sinclair Dinner June 13 in Los Angeles.

Honor recognizes work that calls attention to social and economic abuses in American life.

The Canadian-born Jewison was picked to receive this year’s award partly for his direction of last year’s award-winning film “The Hurricane,” although “there wouldn’t be a bad year to honor Norman Jewison,” Liberty Hill Foundation founder Sarah Pillsbury told Daily Variety.

Rights spotlighted

“He’s addressed an extraordinary number of issues in his work,” Pillsbury said, “from civil rights in ‘In the Heat of the Night’ to Native Americans’ rights in ‘Geronimo.’ In his life, he’s been an extraordinary activist and lent his support to a broad range of issues.”

Nation magazine editor Katerina vanden Heuvel and comedy troupe Culture Clash will also be among honorees at the ceremony.

Event is a fundraiser for the Liberty Hill Foundation, which has given more than $9 million to groups working to alleviate socioeconomic problems.

Past Sinclair Award recipients include Harry Shearer, Ted Danson, Mary Steenburgen, Alfre Woodard, John Singleton, Jane Fonda, Oliver Stone, Harry Belafonte, Martin Ritt, Ed Asner and Mike Farrell.
