Col TriStar rides 'Rivers' o'seas

Kassovitz's thriller repped by Gaumont

CANNES -- Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group has closed a major international rights deal on Matthieu Kassovitz's "The Crimson Rivers," a French-language thriller repped and produced by Gaumont.

"Crimson" is currently in post, but Gaumont screened a 10-minute trailer for the film Sunday that left distribs reaching for their checkbooks.

Pact was one of the first during this Cannes Film Festival that left competitors gnashing their teeth. Domestic buyers are currently circling "Crimson" for a North American deal.

"Crimson" appears to be one of the market's rarest hybrids: Despite its French lingo, American shoppers say that "Crimson" is decidedly mainstream product.

Columbia now has all international territories on the title outside of France, Japan, Italy, Germany, Taiwan and Korea.

The $18 million pic stars Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel as police officers. Kassovitz previously helmed "Hate" and "Assassins."

Deal was negotiated by CTMPG's Peter Schlessel and Clint Culpepper and Gaumont's Pierre-Ange Le Pogam.
