Thesps get in spirit of 'Christmas'

Callow to play Scrooge, Cage and Winslet voice characters

Nicolas Cage and Kate Winslet are among the stars who have lent their voices to a new British animated movie based on Charles Dickens' classic "A Christmas Carol."

The project, which is in production and will be completed next summer, also stars Simon Callow as Scrooge and Rhys Ifans.

Jimmy Murakami is directing the $12 million pic, which is being co-financed by the Film Consortium (with lotto coin backing) and German fund MDP.

Winchester Films has just struck a deal to handle international sales.

Producer is Iain Harvey of Illuminated Films, with Nik Powell exec producing for Scala Prods.

Few details are available about the project's take on the Yuletide story. But it will be topped and tailed by live-action segments featuring Callow, and all the animation is being hand-drawn.

Film is being targeted for release at Christmas 2001.
