CANNES -- Joan Chen has signed to direct her second indie film, "Fu Song," with New York-based producer Media Space.

Pic is based on the romantic historical novel by Geling Yan, who will write the screenplay. Walt Disney's Hyperion Books will publish a translated version of the book in the U.S. to coincide with theatrical release.

Media Space's Hisami Kuroiwa will produce, with financial backing from a group of Asian investors. Chen hopes to start shooting in late fall.

Chen and Yan collaborated on the former's first indie venture, 1998's "Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl." Chen's "Autumn in New York," with Richard Gere and Winona Ryder, is due out this summer from MGM's United Artists.

"Fu Song" is the story of a young Chinese writer on a trip to San Francisco who falls for two men, one Caucasian and one Chinese-American, and discovers that the triangle began 100 years ago.
