BSkyB to buy soccer Web site

Satcaster also posts loss

LONDON — BSkyB said Wednesday that it will purchase British soccer Web site operator Sports Internet for approximately £300 million ($460 million) in stock.

The satcaster also posted a third-quarter loss of $34 million, despite sturdy growth in its direct-to-home subscriber base.

Sports Internet operates a leading online betting shop as well as the official sites of a clutch of top-flight soccer clubs. Its acquisition will bolster chief exec Tony Ball’s plans to turn Skysports.com into Britain’s top sports portal.

Set-top expenditures

BSkyB attributed its quarterly loss — its fourth consecutive frame in the red — to increased spend on programming and marketing, due largely to a free set-top box offer begun in May 1999.

Its DTH subscribership increased by 190,000 in the quarter, for a total of 4.16 million, of which two-thirds (2.75 million) now receive BSkyB’s SkyDigital platform. Nearest rival ONdigital has an estimated 730,000 subs.
