Acquisitive Minds: Claudia Macedo

Director of acquisitions at Globosat, the leading pay TV programmer in Brazil

  • How would you rate the quality of the film product available today?

"This year's Oscar selection reflected the industry's trend toward higher-quality films. Films are increasingly better and of more consistent quality. Studios are giving more freedom to its filmmakers, which is positive. We are seeing a rebirth of auteur filmmaking; Dreamworks' 'American Beauty' is the most outstanding example of this trend."

  • What is the impact of the Internet on your business?

"It has a great impact. We use the Internet on a daily basis as a researching tool. We check the home pages of all studios and, when it is a release, we go to the film site. We also research the film database of Yahoo!, IMDB and Cinema Brasil (cinemabrazil.com.br)."

  • What is your advice on keeping cool in a bidding war?

"Negotiating requires experience and maturity. We have a policy of working in a healthy environment. The idea is to prevent prices from going too high, which is bad for both our competitors and for us."

  • What is your favorite dealmaking spot in Cannes?

"A pizza place called Vesuvio, but we go there to relax a bit, not to negotiate. The bulk of the negotiations, about 90% of my meetings, take place at stands of our suppliers."
