Guiliani diagnosed with cancer

New York Mayor weighing political options

At a news conference at City Hall Thursday, New York mayor Rudolph Guiliani announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The cancer was in its early stages and was treatable, said the mayor, who noted that he was otherwise in “great shape.” But with the Republican state convention a month away, and Gotham media salivating over what promises to be one of Gotham’s most contentious senate races in recent years, many questions remained unanswered about the mayor’s plans.

Asked repeatedly if he would continue his run, the mayor told reporters, “I don’t know the answer to that yet.”

Juleanne Glover, a spokesperson for the campaign said Thursday “we’re proceeding ahead as planned.”

But the mayor was more circumspect. “In fairness to me, to the Senate race, to the Republican party, to all the parties,” he said, “you need more time to think about it and I really need to know what the course of treatment is going to be before I can evaluate."
