Palau among top female entrepreneurs

Confab fetes international business women

Julia Palau, majority owner and CEO of London-based J&M Entertainment, was named one of the leading women entrepreneurs of the world for the year 2000 during the fourth annual confab of that name, held in Venice, Italy, April 9-12.

The four-day gathering, produced by international consulting firm the Star Group, included past honorees as well as the 40 women, including Palau, feted this year.

Event was created by Star "to highlight the accomplishments of women business owners worldwide, the effect they have on the global economy and especially to showcase these women as role models of success for the next generation," said Anita Alberts, Star Group prexy.

J&M Entertainment is an international film finance, production and distribution company. Because of her post at J&M, Palau is one of the highest-ranking women execs in the film industry. As a production entity, J&M's credits include "The English Patient," "An American Werewolf in Paris," and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape." Company has a catalog of more than 200 films.

Tops in tech

Palau also took home the IBM Technology Award during a breakfast hosted by Big Blue, one of the leading sponsors of the Venice event. The IBM award honors senior women execs responsible for developing global partnerships.

This year's honorees represented industries as diverse as agriculture, banking, bottling, communications, construction, cosmetics, education, engineering, fashion, finance, health care, import/export, manufacturing, publishing, real estate, service industries, textiles, transportation and travel. Collectively, they contribute more than $85 billion to the global economy.

Sponsors of the Leading Women Entrepreneurs of the World include, as well as IBM, the Chase Manhattan Private Bank, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Mont Blanc. Supporters include Christian Dior and Ruinart Champagne.
