LATIN AMERICA
MGM Networks Latam has acquired exclusive rights to air the American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) Awards show in the region.
The fifth annual awards ceremony, held April 16 in Pasadena, Calif., featured performances by Elvis Crespo, Los Lobos and Christina Aguilera. Previous years’ shows were not broadcast in Latin America.
The two-hour special will air on the MGM channel in 18 countries in Latin America and on MGM Gold in Brazil. ABC holds the U.S. rights.
Sony Entertainment TV Latam has upped Jesus Torres to general director from his post as VP of operations and director of promotions for the Sony channel.
Torres is now involved with long-term business and strategy development for the channel.
CANADA
Phyllis Platt, executive director of arts and entertainment at CBC Television, has resigned from the Canuck pubcaster effective April 28. She will continue to act as a consultant to CBC TV veepee Harold Redekopp on several key business issues.
No replacement has been named for Platt.
An exec shuffle at the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) has ushered in a new president, VP and executive board.
After 11 years with the DGC, Allan King has stepped down as Guild president. At its annual meeting, members of the DGC elected longtime Guild executive Alan Goluboff to take his place. A new national executive board was also elected.
Grace Gilroy, chair of the Guild’s Alberta District Council, will take Goluboff’s current position as VP of the DGC.
BRAZIL
TV Bandeirantes has hired Roberto de Oliveira away from TV Globo as its new VP of television.
De Oliveira replaces Antonio Athayde, who left the broadcaster in late March, following disagreements with company prexy Johnny Saad.
Oliveira, 52, was most recently director of new projects at TV Globo.
Pay TV operator TVA has appointed ad agency exec Doris Weinberg as its marketing director, replacing Flavia de Justa.
In her new post, Weinberg will also oversee policy for the company’s Internet products.
