John G. McCarthy

John G. McCarthy, a former president of the Motion Picture Export Assn. and later the Television Program Export Assn., died March 5 at his home in Bryn Mawr, Pa., after suffering from complications of a stroke. He was 90.

McCarthy, who was born in Massachusetts, took a BA from Williams College, an MBA from Harvard and an law degree from Harvard Law School.

After his service as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserves during World War II, he began his career promoting the ex-port of Hollywood feature films and television programs to Europe and South America. In 1946, McCarthy joined the Motion Picture Association of America as deputy and worked his way up to head of the MPEA.

McCarthy also served as U.S. representative to the Organization for European Economic Cooperation and minister for Eco-nomic Affairs at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in Paris during the late 1950s.

McCarthy is survived by his wife, Lily Lambert McCarthy, a son, a daughter and four grandchildren.
