Warner Bros. has optioned the Jeff McCarthy spec satire "Smoking Is Good for You" for Andrew Lazar's Mad Chance Prods.
The arrangement also includes a blind deal for McCarthy to write another script that will be produced by Mad Chance.
"Smoking" skewers the tobacco industry in the story of a delusional tobacco farmer who kidnaps his dead son's body and buries it in his field. The result is a miracle harvest that doesn't cause, but actually cures, cancer.
McCarthy, a former standup comic, previously sold the spec "Magnificent Bastards" to Betty Thomas and Jenno Topping's Tall Trees Prods.
Credits for Mad Chance include the upcoming Paramount-DreamWorks co-production "Numbers," starring John Travolta, and Warner Bros.' "Space Cowboys."
McCarthy is repped by attorney Robert Offer at Bloom Hergott Diemer & Cook and Hohman Maybank Lieb.
