JOHANNESBURG -- Political correctness has been added to the list of criteria for the classification of films, videos and computer games in South Africa.
Under draft guidelines published Friday by the Film and Publications Board, a new category -- prejudice -- will be added to the sex, language, violence and nudity categories. Films deemed to show prejudice or negative stereotyping relating to race, gender, ethnicity or religion could be age-restricted.
The guidelines, which were two years in the making, have been released for public comment by the board. They will be used to determine age restrictions for films, videos, DVDs and computer or videogames.
South Africa's Films and Publications Act requires the board to protect children against "harmful and disturbing materials" by imposing age restrictions in six categories.
The board will also provide consumer info, designated by the letters V for violence, S for sex, L for strong language, N for nudity and P for prejudice.
