Laurels to rest on
PGA winners do what they want for a living
"We're just a couple of guys who are doing what we want to do for a living," Jinks said modestly upon accepting the PGA's pic producer of the year nod at the Century Plaza Hotel.
Even more humble was "ER," "West Wing" and "Third Watch" producer John Wells, who picked up the guild's Kodak Visionary award for television.
"What vision do I actually possess? Doing three shows wasn't exactly smart," he laughed. "But I do have the vision to work with smart people."
Joe Roth tried his darndest to say nice things about PGA lifetime achievement honoree Jerry Bruckheimer: "Jerry is the epitome of a producer. I know there's questions in the guild about what producers do, but he's tenaciously involved in every aspect of filming."
Yet following a screening of clips from his work, Bruckheimer came back with, "It's interesting to have your life's work reduced to a five-minute reel, but to the film critics, that's probably enough."
Other recipients of the Golden Laurel included Oprah Winfrey and Kate Forte, longform TV producers of the year for "Tuesdays With Morrie"; David Chase, best episodic TV producer, "The Sopranos"; Paramount Pictures chair Sherry Lansing, career achievement; and Aaron Spelling, lifetime achievement.
